College Library
Library of the Hellenic National Defence College
ΗNDC Library functions as a hub for gathering and disseminating information, with the goal of aiding ongoing research and educational activities at the HNDC. It offers documented resources in diverse formats such as books, periodicals, and e-books, while also providing library patrons with simultaneous assistance and guidance for optimal information retrieval. Furthermore, it endeavours to address the educational and research requirements of the HNDC’s staff. Its collection comprises around 20.000 volumes of monographs and reference material. The Library enriches its collections by taking into account the educational and research requirements of the HNDC. It’s worth noting a recent significant donation of approximately 2.200 books and periodicals from the son of the esteemed Professor Mr. Yiallourides, who was an expert in International Relations.
The Library’s resources can be categorised into three main groups: open access collections, restricted access collections and digital collections. Open access collections encompass a range of resources, including: Monographs, commemorative volumes, and conference proceedings covering diverse subjects like military sciences, strategy and leadership, political and social sciences, foreign relations, global history, foreign policy, geopolitics, and biographies of notable personalities. Reference materials such as dictionaries, encyclopaedias, and other scholarly resources. Additionally, they include Greek as well as foreign language periodicals. Restricted access collections include rare and valuable printed publications of the library dating from the 19th to 20th century, mainly concerning history and strategy. Lastly, it’s worth noting some of the digital collections available at the Library. These include a limited selection of e-books accessible for study.
In addition, the Library collects the academic work (theses) of the HNDC’s students in both print and digital formats and ensures proper cataloguing and documentation of this material, making it accessible for search by our library patrons. The library’s operations adhere to international standards for material management and processing. Accordingly, the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules are employed for metadata management in MARC21 format for cataloguing books. Subject terms are derived from the subject headings of the National Library of Greece. The Dewey Decimal Classification system is utilised for material classification. Furthermore, an online public access catalogue, named KOHA, is available, enabling users to search for books using various criteria such as title, author, subject, or keyword.
