Curriculum

Students

HNDC courses attend:

Senior Officers from the Armed Forces, selected by the respective General Staffs.

Senior Officers of the Hellenic Police, Fire Brigade, and the Hellenic Coast Guard.

Public servants, from Governmental Organizations and Private Sector, upon recommendation of the Hellenic National Defense General Staff (HNDGS) and approval of the Hellenic Republic Ministry of National Defense.

Senior Officers and public servants of the Republic of Cyprus, EU states, as well as officers from allied countries, upon decision of the Hellenic Republic Ministry of National Defense

Education:

Resident Course

The course commences each year in September, lasts up to 30 Educational Weeks preceded by 5 preparatory weeks conducted online aimimg at the individual preparation of the students before their arrival at the college on topics such as History, Strategy, Geopolitics, Leadership, Economics, etc.:

Distance Learning Course

The course commences each year in September and lasts 12 months. Studies are conducted online via a Video Tele Conference (VTC) application.

International Senior Course

The course takes place each year from early September to early December.

International Senior Course (ISC)

Specialized Study and Information Courses

HNDC conducts annually, different Specialized Information Courses according to Hellenic National Defense General Staff (HNDGS) guidelines.

Educational Programs – Sectors

The educational program is drafted by HNDC and approved by the Hellenic National Defense General Staff. It is structured around 5 Basic Sectors, which also include Specialized Sectors. The 5 Basic Sectors, divided according to discrete levels of the International Studies analysis, are:

1. Political and Diplomatic History.

Aim of the sector is to make students capable of:

        • Acquiring a deep understanding of strategic concepts and examining the historical practice of states through analytical strategic thinking.
        • Understanding leadership dilemmas and decisions at the strategic level through historical examples

2. Strategy – Sources of National Power.

Aim of the sector is to make students capable of:

        • Understanding the impact and limitations imposed by economy on shaping national security strategy.
        • Understanding the strategic implications of power application in strategy implementation and the challenges of coordination with other actors.
        • Understanding the impact of technology on shaping National Strategy.
        • Comprehending and utilizing all power factors in shaping strategy.

3. Geopolitical Perspective of the International – Regional Environment.

Aim of the sector is to make students capable of:

        • Understanding decision – making framework at state level and the impact of politics and institutional organization on it.
        • Understanding the arising challenges from linking national and alliance strategies.
        • Applying taught methods of analysis in examining contemporary challenges because of the linkage between national strategy and requirements imposed by alliances.

4. International Relations – Foreign Policy.

Aim of the sector is to make students capable of:

        • Acquiring a comprehensive view of international relations theories and their evolution, gaining the ability to apply them as behavior analysis of international actors.
        • Acknowledging the role of international law in international security and understanding its aspects, with particular national/regional interest.
        • Understanding the geostrategic environment, the contemporary international security environment and the impact of its characteristics on strategy shaping.
        • Understanding the role of NATO in International and National Security.

5. Crisis Management – Leadership on the Strategic Level.

Aim of this sector is to make students capable of:

        • Operating effectively as members of a team handling applied strategic issues with an emphasis on crisis management and organizational change.
        • Understanding the role and challenges of leadership and a leaders required characteristics.
        • Understanding the significance of the ethical factor as a comparative strategic advantage.
        • Understanding the basic principles of negotiation at bilateral and multilateral level.
        • Understanding crisis management organization and principles through examination of historical examples.
        • Understanding the complexity of crisis management and develop the ability to analyze possible solutions within a given organizational framework.
